What is musicology?

My current research project focuses on international exhibitions and the changing patterns of art management related to music at the turn of the 20th century. Specially, I investigate the role of elite women in the standarisation and globalisation of musical practices, labelled as "Western", in the frame of those international events.

"-I'm a musicologist; -beautiful!, what instrument do you play?" This is a typical misunderstanding when musicologists introduce themselves in a common talk or in a party. Musicology is a relative young and unknown academic discipline. Is a musicologist a musician? How can musicologists undertake scholarly research? In which branch of knowledge is Musicology: Humanities, Social Sciences, or Natural Sciences? To sum up: What is Musicology for?

This talk will be in English.

Can We Know What the Universe Is Like? Answers from Cosmology and Philosophy

Claus Beisbart investigates how do simulations work, what are probabilities, what methods do we have in philosophy?

Does the Universe have a beginning? Is is infinitely extended in space? Modern cosmology tries to answer these questions. But how far did it get? And how far can it get?

This talk will be in English.
